After four years of living on the road in our trusty Airstream Classic, traveling across the country and working remotely, my wife and I finally decided to put down roots in the picturesque mountain town of Stehekin, Washington. It’s been an incredible journey filled with adventures, challenges, and self-discovery, and we are thrilled to share our story of transitioning from a nomadic lifestyle to a serene mountain paradise.
Living in an Airstream Classic has been a dream come true for us. We’ve traveled to countless national parks, hiked scenic trails, and met amazing people along the way. The freedom and flexibility of working remotely from the road allowed us to explore new places and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. But after years of constantly being on the move, we felt a longing for a place to call home, a place where we could find peace and tranquility.
That’s when we stumbled upon Stehekin, Washington, a remote community tucked away in the Cascade Mountains. Stehekin is only accessible by boat or floatplane, and its pristine wilderness and close-knit community instantly captured our hearts. We were drawn to the idea of living in a place where we could be surrounded by nature’s beauty and have a sense of community, while still enjoying the remote lifestyle we had grown accustomed to.
Moving to Stehekin has been a major change, but one that we’ve eagerly embraced. We traded our life on the road for a cozy cabin nestled in the woods, surrounded by towering peaks, lush forests, and crystal-clear lakes. It’s a different kind of adventure, one that involves immersing ourselves in the rhythm of the seasons and finding solace in the simple pleasures of life.
One of the things we love most about Stehekin is the sense of community. With a small population of around 100 residents, everyone knows each other, and there’s a strong sense of camaraderie. Neighbors lend a helping hand, share stories around the fire, and come together for local events and gatherings. It’s a refreshing change from the transient nature of life on the road, and we’ve quickly felt a sense of belonging in this tight-knit community.
The natural beauty of Stehekin is awe-inspiring. The North Cascades National Park is just a stone’s throw away, with its rugged peaks, pristine lakes, and abundant wildlife. We’ve spent our days exploring the park, hiking to hidden waterfalls, and marveling at the breathtaking scenery. There’s something magical about waking up to the sound of birds chirping and the sight of mist rising from the lake, knowing that we are surrounded by some of the most stunning landscapes in the country.
Living in an Airstream Classic has taught us the importance of sustainable living, and Stehekin aligns perfectly with our values. The community prioritizes conservation and sustainability, with a strong emphasis on recycling, composting, and reducing waste. We’ve found ourselves more connected to nature and more conscious of our impact on the environment, as we learn to live in harmony with the surrounding wilderness.
Of course, transitioning from a nomadic lifestyle to settling down in Stehekin has had its challenges. Adjusting to a fixed location and a slower pace of life has required some patience and adaptation. But the rewards have been well worth it. We’ve found a sense of peace and serenity in Stehekin that we hadn’t experienced before, and we are grateful for the opportunity to call this place our home.
As we reflect on our journey from life on the road to settling down in Stehekin, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences and lessons we’ve learned along the way.
