What makes someone sell most of their possessions to live and work remotely from an RV?

What motivates someone to make a drastic change in their life? Often it is precipitated by some major event like an illness, job change, or stage in life such as getting married. I guess you could say we were sort of experiencing a change in our stage of life as we were almost empty nesters. Our oldest daughter had just been married and her husband joined the Navy, which meant she was still living with us while he was in basic training. Our youngest daughter was a sophomore in college in Montana and we were busily working to pay those out of state tuition bills. She would return home on break. So not quite the empty nesters we were picturing.

I tend to have a hard time saying no, and by this point in my career I was juggling the job of four people at my place of employment. That was probably what really did it. I really wanted to have more control over the type of work I was doing. This, and a combination of watching various full-time RV YouTube channels, got the wheels turning (figuratively and literally).

We decided to sell our 2000 square foot home and everything we couldn’t take with us. I would start my own consulting business, and my husband, Jason, would quit his job and be my web guy. Between our savings and the sale of our home, we figured we could live for quite a while as we built our business. After all, there is more to life than money. Interestingly enough, when Jason went in to quit, his boss said, “no.” They asked if he would be willing to work remotely and keep his job with full salary and benefits. Essentially, this made the decision that much easier.

On August 29, 2019, we set off in our twenty-two-foot, 2019 Airstream Sport. Our oldest had moved to Japan where her husband was now stationed, and we gave our youngest almost all of the old furniture from the house for her campus apartment. We were finally free to explore this great country. It has been a grand adventure so far and I hope you have the time to explore our adventures.

Here is a bit about each of us.

Jason

Trailer Backer upper

Computer nerd and trailer puller guy.  When my wife said lets sell all our junk and hit the road I freaked!  My tools! my toys! what do I do will all my crap!  Well I find that I don’t mess any of the crap and I’m having a blast.  This country is amazing, the sites, the people, all wonderful.  I don’t regret a thing hitting the road it’s amazing, what a beautiful country.  I’m super lucky that I’m still allowed to work remotely my current job the that has been a huge blessing.  That’s always huge concern, how do you pay the bills, right?  Well downsizing this extreme does give you a ton a freedom and can eliminate almost all your debt so that helps.  Hope to see you on the road!
