On a radiant, sunny day in Stehekin, Washington, my wife Mechelle, our daughter Madalynne, her husband Blake, and I set out for an unforgettable hike along the Agnes Gorge Trail in North Cascades National Park. This out-and-back trail, spanning 4.7 miles, promised a moderate adventure through some of the most stunning landscapes the Pacific Northwest has to offer, and it did not disappoint.
The trailhead, nestled in the remote Stehekin Valley, was easily accessible and marked the start of our journey through dense forests and rolling terrain. As we hiked, the path wound through towering evergreens, with occasional glimpses of the rugged peaks that define the North Cascades. The trail was well-maintained, with a gentle elevation gain that made it approachable for our group, though the loose rocks and roots kept us on our toes.
After about 2.3 miles, we reached the highlight of the hike: Agnes Gorge itself. The sight was breathtaking. The Agnes Creek, fed by glacial runoff, roared through the gorge with a vibrant blue-green hue that shimmered in the sunlight. The river made a dramatic left turn, cascading over rocks in a display of frothy white water that was both powerful and mesmerizing. We stood in awe, snapping photos and soaking in the raw beauty of the scene. The sound of the rushing water echoed off the steep gorge walls, creating a serene yet exhilarating atmosphere.
Mechelle and I marveled at the pristine wilderness, while Madalynne and Blake couldn’t stop pointing out the clarity of the water and the sheer force of the current. We lingered at the gorge, enjoying a picnic lunch with the river’s roar as our soundtrack. The combination of the glacier-fed creek’s vivid colors and the surrounding lush forest made it a perfect moment to connect as a family and appreciate nature’s grandeur.
The return hike was just as enjoyable, with the downhill stretches allowing us to take in the scenery at a leisurely pace. At 4.7 miles round trip, the trail was the perfect length for a half-day adventure, leaving us energized yet satisfied. The sunny weather only amplified the experience, casting golden light through the trees and highlighting the rugged beauty of the North Cascades.
For anyone visiting Stehekin or North Cascades National Park, the Agnes Gorge Trail is a must-do. It’s an accessible hike with a rewarding payoff—a chance to witness the raw power and beauty of a glacial river in one of Washington’s most pristine wilderness areas. Bring your family, pack a lunch, and prepare to be captivated by the magic of Agnes Gorge.
