Imagine being exhausted from four years of fighting and settling down only to experience the coldest and snowiest winter ever recorded. George Washington and his armies faced the bitter snow as they set up camp in Morristown, New Jersey.

The highest-ranking officer, George Washington, moved into the largest home, the Ford Mansion. The Ford Mansion became the headquarters for the army, with the troops spread out across Jockey Hallow.

When visiting Morristown National Historical Park, you can experience the museum with a great video about the winter. A tour of the Ford mansion does require tickets, but they are free. A quick drive down the road to Jockey Hallow provides the opportunity to see replicas of the cabins the troops built.
