Welcome to Port Huron on the Canadian US border. Port Huron is where Thomas Edison got his start by selling fruit and newspapers to commuters on the trains. After that, he began inventing and working on growing a business. It’s tough to appreciate Thomas Edison after reading more about him and how he treated others, including the father of our modern electric systems, Nikola Tesla. Tesla really deserves the credit for a majority of the incredible innovations with electricity, and Thomas Edison was a tyrant when Nikola was working for him. It still is crazy to me that in his effort to sell the idea of DC power over AC, he would electrocute animals to “prove” that AC power was dangerous and should never be used. Well, thank goodness that did not work, or we would have DC power plants everywhere because you can’t move DC power like AC power.
The St Clair river was a wild blue-green color, and we saw some massive ships entering the amazingly huge Lake Huron. It’s really something to see when you’re staring at the shore of a “lake,” and you can’t see land on the other side. The sheer size of these lakes is a sight to behold; you really don’t understand how big they are until you are seeing one in person. I made sure to touch the water; I always get a kick out of that.
We are here another week, and we’re headed to the River Raisin National Battlefield, so more to come on that.
