In 1849, Kreische acquired a sprawling 172-acre plot of land and embarked on an ambitious project. He built a magnificent home overlooking a breathtaking valley and river below, while also establishing Texas’ first commercial brewery on the same grounds.

Perched atop a ridge, the house offers panoramic views of the picturesque countryside, a rare sight in the typically flat terrain of Texas. Descending into a ravine behind the house, visitors can explore the remains of the brewery that Kreische and his family meticulously constructed. Notably, Kreische harnessed the natural spring above the property, diverting its water to flow directly into the brewery’s cistern, serving both as a water source for brewing and a cooling system for the building.

The brewery’s innovative design featured water channels running underneath the floors, with vents strategically positioned above the water to facilitate the circulation of cool air throughout the three floors. While the first floor may not be accessible to visitors, the presence of old kegs is a poignant reminder of the brewery’s rich history, and there are even plans to cultivate some of the original yeast for future brewing endeavors, aiming to recreate Kreische’s legendary Dark Lager.
