While in Clinton, Indiana, for a few weeks, we took a Sunday drive to the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes, Indiana. This memorial stands where several forts were built, including Fort Sackville, which Rogers ended up taking from the British in 1779.
The site sits on the Indiana side of the Wabash River. The Lincoln Memorial Bridge spans the river connecting Indiana and Illinois. Although not an expansive park, there is a visitor’s center with some artifacts and a film in addition to the memorial. The memorial was constructed between 1931 and 1933. The memorial is truly a work of art, an impressive feat of architectural engineering.
I was fascinated by the fact that George Rogers Clark was the brother of William Clark of the famous explorers Lewis and Clark. George Rogers Clark’s story is fascinating, and I encourage you to visit if you are in the area. If you are interested, here is the film you would see in the visitor’s center.
