We had initially set out to see the town of Beaufort and the Reconstruction Era State National Historical Park, but there was not much to see, so we decided to drive out to the coast. Of course, we still stopped by the visitor’s center to get my National Park stamp. Driving out to the Atlantic turned out to be a great idea as we stumbled upon a gem of a state park.
Huntington Island State Park has beaches and lagoons in addition to a historic lighthouse that was built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875. The lighthouse is moveable due to its unique design of interchangeable cast-iron sections. As the beach erodes, the lighthouse can be relocated. The views from the top are spectacular, and you can see for miles. This park is definitely worth a visit.
